indian villageOconaluftee Indian Village is an authentic, genuine replica of an 18th Century Cherokee Indian Village. The tours are guided by area high school students, and they give an explanation of Cherokee history, with a little bit of Indian folklore thrown in for fun.

Oconaluftee Indian Village has live demonstrations of Cherokee Indians at work. You may see them build a canoe, weave baskets, or molding pottery. They use a different blend of fire and clay with their pottery, so it is like nothing you have seen before.

You can also visit their sacred hut, where fire burns 24 hours a day to symbolize the unity of the Cherokee people. Sit on the bench where the chiefs met and planned the future of the tribe.

The outside paths take visitors through thickets and by streams, while your guide will explain how they built houses out of woven saplings and mud. Along the way, you will learn about some of the traditions that continue to be passed down through generations of the Cherokee People.

Oconaluftee Indian Village is located about 3 miles from Cherokee Cabin, right on your way to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. They are open from 9:00 until 5:30 between mid-May and mid-October.
